Commercial & Industrial Fire Protection FAQs
What is needed to protect my commercial or industrial building from fire?
This can vary depending on your building size, occupancy and industry. In general, a fire alarm system, sprinklers and fire extinguishers will be necessary to protect a building. Hard Fire will recommend the proper protection for each facility based on its needs, your mission and building code requirements.
What types of fire detection do you offer?
Hard Fire offers the entire spectrum of notification from standard conventional audio-visual through hazardous location notification to emergency communication that can be customized for things such as hazardous chemical spills and weather emergencies to active shooter situations.

What types of fire suppression do you offer?
We design, install, maintain and monitor special hazard clean agent systems (Novec 1230, Inert agent, high- and low-pressure CO2) and automatic sprinkler and water-based systems including wet, dry, deluge and pre-action sprinkler systems; water mist and foam systems; as well as fire pumps and fire hydrants. We also provide portable and wheeled fire extinguisher options.
Do all sprinkler heads go off when a fire breaks out?
Only in the movies…It actually depends on your type of system, but for the vast majority of sprinkler systems this is not the case. If you have sprinkler heads containing a glass bulb with colored liquid inside or a fusible link, each sprinkler head is individually activated. So, if a fire breaks out in the office break room, only the sprinklers in that area will be activated. This prevents unnecessary water damage to other areas of the building. Industrial application deluge systems are the “open head” sprinklers where every deluge sprinkler head discharges water.
What types of facilities need explosion protection?
Manufacturers and processors of the following products should implement explosion protection in their building: aerosols, vapors, chemicals, food, grain, plastics, pharmaceuticals, wood, paper, powered metals, paints, energy and power.
How is an explosion prevented?
This depends on the type of facility. Several configurations of explosion protection can be used, including explosion venting, explosion suppression and explosion isolation.
What maintenance is required for fire protection systems?
Fire safety systems need to be regularly tested and inspected to keep them operating at peak performance. Fire sprinklers require quarterly testing and inspections, while clean agent systems require semi-annual testing. Depending on the system you have, along with insurance and jurisdictional requirements, we will schedule a maintenance program that keeps your system up-to-date and code compliant.
What type of fire system monitoring do you provide?
We offer a variety of 24/7 monitoring services. This can include Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS), GSM/cellular, TCP/IP (Internet) or HardNet Radio. We recommend HardNet Radio Network as the most reliable and economical option.
